The appearance of your cabinets makes a significant impact on the overall effect of your kitchen. While you may wish to upgrade them, completely removing and replacing cabinets may be out of the scope of some homeowners. There may be alternate ways to upgrade your cabinets to better fit your personal style and complement your kitchen. Check out these six kitchen cabinet upgrade ideas.
The key to saving money during a cabinet refurb is pinpointing two or three changes you can afford that would make the most significant difference. Often, you don’t need to alter everything with the cabinets to make them look completely different.
- Paint: Painting your cabinets is one of the least expensive (yet still incredibly effective) ways to change up your cabinets. A light color can open up a small kitchen, while a bold color turns your kitchen into a statement. Before painting, be sure to wipe the cabinets down to remove any dust, drips, and other kitchen mess. Research the kind of paint job you want to do so that you get the best bang for your buck. High-gloss resists marks from fingerprints and can look like metal when you choose neutral colors. If you want more of a farmhouse look, you can create a distressed or antiqued look by gently sanding parts of the cabinets after you paint them, so they look weathered.
- Update the hardware: You’d be surprised at how different cabinets can look just when you change the hardware. Changing wood knobs to skinny metal pulls will give you a more modern look; you can go with glass knobs that catch the light and sparkle if you want to go fancier.
- Reface the cabinets: A great way to get a new look for a fraction of the price of replacing the cabinets is to have them refaced. You can add some new veneer and cabinet doors to change the look without tearing everything out completely.
- Install under-cabinet lighting: Sometimes, adding some ambiance can go a long way. A dark kitchen isn’t appealing, but adding under-cabinet lighting can brighten the space and make it seem cozy. Puck lights are inexpensive and quick to install, but LED strips can also work well and are easily hidden behind a lip.
- Add a butcher block: If you are lacking space to fit all the items you want to put into cabinets, a butcher block is a great way to add some more storage as well as additional counter space. You can buy one for less than a couple hundred dollars, or you can try your hand at building one yourself. Be sure to choose a sturdy material for the top, like wood or granite, to withstand all the chopping and prep work you will be doing.
- Try a plate rack: If you have lovely dishes that don’t get to see the light of day much, a plate rack is a creative way to display them while freeing up space in your cabinets and on your counters. Also, it leaves room on your drying rack for other items.
